The General Plan is the City’s long-term policy guide for the physical, economic, and environmental growth and revitalization of the city. What is the purpose of a General Plan? The General Plan serves to:
Identify the community’s needs as they relate to development;
Provide a foundation for local government decision-making;
Provide residents with opportunities to participate in the planning and decision - making process for their community; and
Inform residents, developers, decision-makers, and other cities and countries of the ground rules that guide development within the community
Why is an Update needed? The needs of the community change as the City evolves. The General Plan is being updated to reflect changes in land use, community needs, and values. This update provides an exciting opportunity for the City and residents to evaluate the current plan and to identify how the City can implement that vision into the future.
Why you should get involved? Do you have an opinion on how the city should grow? Are there certain things you would like to see in the City of Surprise in the Future? Are you concerned about housing, jobs, and the environment? Then help us plan the future of Surprise!
How can you get involved? Public meetings, workshops and hearings have been occurring. In March of 2008, residents were able to offer additional thoughts on the major plan themes - Building Heritage, Neighborhood Matters and Global Village - that make up the proposed new plan. There were special break-out sessions in which participants were able to voice their opinion on future planning villages. For those unable to attend the meetings, opportunities to participate will be available on the internet throughout the month of March. Work on the plan will continue through the spring and early summer months. The General Plan update document will be reviewed by the Planning and Zoning Commission in June of 2008. The Mayor and City Council review the plan in July of 2008.
